Oman kept its low-rise skyline and its wadis and it is the better for it. Jebel Akhdar sits 2,000 metres above the heat, Musandam cuts fjords into the Strait of Hormuz and Salalah turns green in August while the rest of the peninsula bakes.
The Low Skyline
Muscat is built into the gaps between the Hajar mountains and the sea, which is why it never sprawls. Mutrah souq at dusk, then a wadi in the morning. Jebel Akhdar is two hours up a road that climbs the whole way.
The Green Season
From late June the khareef pulls cloud off the Indian Ocean and the Dhofar hills turn green for around ten weeks. Waterfalls run and the temperature holds in the twenties while the rest of the peninsula bakes.
