The National Museum of Qatar opened in 2019 on the Corniche, a short distance from the Museum of Islamic Art. Jean Nouvel's building is made of interlocking discs modelled on the desert rose, the crystal formation found in Qatar's sands. It wraps around the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani.

The museum's official site describes galleries that engage all the senses in telling the story of the nation and its people, from the land and the sea through pearling and the arrival of oil to the modern state. There is an online collection and an AI Digital Centre with school programmes.
