The best time to visit the Gulf, month by month

The Gulf does not have one travel season. Winter belongs to the cities and deserts. Spring shifts towards the mountains. Summer has one clear answer in the south of Oman.

9 minute read

The best time to visit the Gulf depends on what you want to do. A desert trip needs a different month from a museum weekend. A mountain stay follows a different rhythm from the coast. This calendar gives you one useful starting point for every month.

Weather changes from year to year. Religious holidays and public events also move. Check the forecast and official opening times before you book.

The Gulf travel calendar

January: AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Cooler days make the desert easier to explore. Build the trip around Hegra, AlUla Old Town and an evening in the oasis. Leave one open morning because the landscape is the part that should not feel rushed.

February: Doha, Qatar

This is a good month for a compact city break. Walk the Corniche, spend time in one museum and keep an evening for Souq Waqif. Qatar's official tourism guide describes November to February as its mild winter period.

March: Muscat and Jebel Akhdar, Oman

Use Muscat as the first stop then move into the mountains. March sits inside Oman's rosewater season which runs from March to May. Check local harvest timing before planning a visit around the roses.

April: Jebel Akhdar, Oman

Choose the mountains over the coast if the rose terraces are your reason to travel. Days are getting warmer at sea level while higher ground stays useful for walks and long outdoor lunches.

May: Dubai, UAE

Plan around early mornings and evenings. Keep the hottest part of the day for galleries, lunch or a hotel pool. May can still work well for a short city stay when the schedule is deliberately light.

June: Doha, Qatar

Treat this as a culture-first weekend. Visit one museum in the morning and another indoor space after lunch. Visit Qatar recommends museums, shopping and indoor attractions during the hotter June to September period.

July: Salalah, Oman

Khareef begins changing Dhofar with cloud, mist and green hills. Conditions vary through the season so check the local forecast before driving into the mountains or planning a wadi day.

August: Salalah, Oman

This is the Gulf's clearest summer change of scene. The Dhofar coast is cooler than much of the peninsula during khareef. Expect mist, busy weekends and slower roads around popular viewpoints.

September: Salalah or coastal Oman

Early September can still catch the end of khareef. Later in the month suits a quieter coastal trip. Confirm conditions before booking because the landscape changes quickly once the seasonal weather eases.

October: Riyadh and Diriyah, Saudi Arabia

Evenings become more comfortable and the outdoor season starts returning. Keep the first day simple then spend the second around Diriyah. Check opening times directly because access and event schedules can change.

November: Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE

Beach mornings, outdoor dinners and desert evenings fit into the same weekend. November is also useful for combining both cities without building the trip around air-conditioned stops.

December: Bahrain

Bahrain works well when you want history, food and the coast without long transfers. Pair Muharraq and the Pearling Path with Qal'at al-Bahrain then leave the final evening open for Manama.

The simple answer

Choose November to March for the easiest first trip across most of the Gulf. Choose March or April for the mountains of Oman. Choose July or August when Salalah and the Dhofar coast are the reason for travelling.
